What to Know Before (and After) Your Tattoo

Whether it’s your first tattoo or your fiftieth, it’s normal to have questions. From walk-in availability to choosing the right artist and what to expect on the day, we’ve answered some of the most common questions we hear in the studio. Here’s everything you need to know before (and after) getting tattooed at Blue Lady Melbourne.

What’s the story behind Blue Lady Tattoo?

Melbourne is the undisputed arts capital of Australia and arguably the tattoo capital of the Southern Hemisphere. With world class shops and talent in every suburb, it’s not hard to see why this city is regarded so highly internationally. Blue Lady Tattoo was Established in the year 2013, in the thriving heart of the Melbourne CBD. The aim was to create a shop where everyone is treated fairly and the experience for the client and artist is a positive one. Since then we have built a solid reputation for our work while also providing a friendly and relaxed atmosphere for our clients. We had the honour of being voted Melbourne’s Number 1 shop by Timeout in 2018, and we couldn’t have been more delighted or humbled to be included in that list of world class talent. We will continue to hold ourselves to this standard and provide you with a great experience you can wear proudly.

How much do tattoos cost, and what’s included?

You must be 18+ and have photo ID.
Parental consent for under 18’s is not accepted.

We accept cash only. Deposits of $100 are payable for all bookings and are not refundable unless 48 hours notice of cancelation is given.

The shop minimum is $150. This covers the cost of a sterile instrument set up for each client. All needles and tubes are single use and disposable, to ensure the highest safety and hygiene. You are paying for your health and safety. We use only the best equipment for you.

Most smaller-medium tattoos are quoted based on body placement, design and size. You are paying for the artist’s experience, efficiency and expertise, not for time specifically. Please keep in mind we get faster as we get better, so a less experienced artist may take two or three times as long as us to do the same job. General pricing will be given on a case by case basis.

You can bring one friend along, but we can’t always have them sit with you. Unfortunately we don’t have room to fit large groups of friends in the waiting area, we need space for our paying clients. Please have your mates meet you after your tattoo. There are lots of cafes and bars nearby for them to enjoy.

For health and safety reasons please do not walk into any working area of the shop without permission.

Respect the space and the other people paying for their tattoos. We reserve the right to refuse anyone for any reason.

How long does a tattoo take to heal, and what should I do?

Leave wrapped up for 1-3 hours, remove wrap then shower and wash with hot soapy water. Pat dry with a clean towel. Apply a thin layer of aftercare cream 2 – 3 times per day for 2 weeks. Do not go swimming or soak the tattoo (no baths/ saunas etc) showers are fine and washing your tattoo in the shower is fine. Avoid direct sunlight and don’t get sunburned, do not apply sunscreen until your tattoo is healed. Once healed, sunscreen will preserve the brightness of your tattoo. We recommend Bepanthen cream, available from any chemist.

Does Blue Lady Tattoo accept walk-ins, or should I book in advance?

We welcome walk-ins when possible, but availability can vary depending on the day. For custom work or longer sessions, booking ahead is recommended to secure time with your preferred artist.

I’m getting my first tattoo, what should I expect?

We’ve tattooed thousands of first-timers and will walk you through every step. You’ll have time to discuss the design with your artist and ask any questions before we begin.

What tattoo styles do Blue Lady Tattoo artists specialise in?

Our team covers a range of styles including American Traditional, fine line, blackwork, colour realism, neo-traditional, floral, and more. You can view each artist’s portfolio on our Artists page to find someone whose work you connect with.

Can I bring my own tattoo design?

Yes! Whether it’s a sketch, a reference image, or something you’ve had in mind for years, we’re happy to work with your ideas and adapt them into a custom tattoo.

How do I choose the right artist for my tattoo?

Each of our artists has a unique style and voice. Take a look at their work on our Artists page and reach out if you need help matching your idea to the right artist.

Does Blue Lady Tattoo offer flash tattoos or only custom work?

We offer both! Our artists regularly release flash designs (often shared on Instagram) and are also happy to create one-of-a-kind custom pieces just for you.

Is there anything I should do before my tattoo appointment?

Come well-rested, hydrated, and make sure you’ve eaten beforehand. Wear comfy clothes and avoid alcohol the night before because it helps your body handle the session better.
